Facilities
Argonne's Chemistry Division has a wide array of laboratories and instruments
available for research use. Three major national facilities deserve special
mention:
- The Intense Pulsed Neutron Source (IPNS) allows scientists to investigate
neutron scattering and diffraction.
- The Advance Photon Source (APS) provides the world's most brilliant
X-ray beams.
- The Advanced Computing Research Facility operates a 128-node IBM SP2
multiprocessor parallel computer for work in theoretical chemistry.
There are laboratories dedicated to organic and inorganic synthesis,
chemical physics, and work with radioactive materials. Capabilities range
from conventional tracer work to remote manipulator systems.
- Computer resources include 11 IBM RISC workstations, 2 DEC Alpha RISC
workstations with high-performance graphics hardware, a 10-node DEC
Alpha parallel computer, and an 8-node IBM SP1 parallel computer.
- The Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) Laboratory has 200-, 300-, and
500-Hz solution- and solid-state NMR spectrometers and 100-, 200-, and
400-MHz solid-state and magnetic resonance imaging systems.
- The Mass Spectrometry unit has five spectrometers with laser desorption
capability including an MS 50 TA three-sector spectrometer that operates
at 80,000 resolution.
- The Radiation and Photochemistry Group operates pulsed electron accelerators
(20-MeV electron linac, 3-MeV Van de Graaff) and an intense Co-60 source.
- The Chemistry Division staff includes a glass blower and a machinist.
- Other available instrumentation includes
- Single crystal X-ray diffractometer
- Infrared spectrophotometer
- Mossbauer spectrometer
- Cluster source and flow-tube-reactor for studying chemical reactions
of metal clusters
- Large molecular beam apparatus and laser based time-of-flight mass
spectrometer for analyzing reaction products
- Pulsed-FFT and CW electron paramagnetic resonance spectrometers
operating at X- and Q-band microwave frequencies
- Photoelectron spectrometers
- Time-resolved laser spectrometer
- Absorption and fluorescence spectrophotometers
- Dynamic laser light scattering apparatus
- Protein liquid chromatograph
- Optically detected NMR spectrometer
- High-speed ultra-centrifuges
- Density gradient preparation equipment
- Microcalorimeter
- Zeta potential apparatus
- Jet, planetary, and attritor grinding mills
- Capillary electrophoresis
- Microphotometer/optical microscopes
- Approximately 60 lasers including excimer, Nd:YAG, CO2,
and ps/fs dye
- Continuous-low molecular beam apparatus equipped with a Wiley-McLaren
time-of-flight mass spectrometer
Argonne's facilities include laboratories designed for work with radioactive
materials, including shielded areas with remote manipulators for handling
of highly radioactive materials. A 60Co irradiation facility is also available.
Separate facilities are dedicated to an array of physical measurements
ranging from calorimetry to synchrotron X-ray absorption work.
